Mō tēnei tūranga | About this role

This Senior Advisor - Governance role sits within the Investment & Planning team within the Office of the Hautū, Te Poutāhū | Curriculum Centre.

As part of this team, the Senior Advisor is responsible for providing governance advice and support across the governance work programme.

This is an ideal role for a confident and capable Senior Advisor who has strong relationship building and advisory skills.

You will work as part of a small, agile, and responsive team that is responsible for strengthening the system of governance, provide knowledge, information and insights on key issues and risks internally across Te Poutāhū.

This role acts as a key advisor to Te Poutāhū leadership team so they can effectively carry out their responsibilities in effective governance.

This role also provides high quality secretariat services to ensure key governance groups are well planned, reporting is fit for purpose, and discussions are strategically aligned.

Mōhou ake | About you

Our successful applicant will have a strong advisory background and providing this advice to senior leaders for them to make decisions.

You will also need to be comfortable working in a challenging and fast-paced environment.

With a desire to take on a new challenge, you'll be able to manage multiple priorities at once and meet the needs of the office.

You will demonstrate knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an understanding of Te Ao Māori and promote tikanga and Te Reo Māori.

You will also have knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an appreciation of te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) as it applies in the public sector.


The following skills and experience would be advantageous:

  • Proven experience providing efficient and effective secretariat and advisory services to a senior executive team or an advisory or statutory body
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Strong attention to detail and a proactive approach
  • Superior report writing skills
  • Excellent planning and priority setting skills
  • Ability to make sound judgements and identify and manage risks effectively
  • Strong organisational skills
Mātau rōpū ake | About our ministry, group, and team

At Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga, we work to provide services and support nationally, regionally and locally to the education sector, and in some cases, directly to ākonga and whanau.

To better deliver on this, we are currently undergoing an organisational design change. The transition phase to improve the way we deliver our purpose will be complete in 2023.

Te Poutāhū (Curriculum Centre) brings together curriculum, teaching expertise and evidence for the development, support and review of inclusive curricula, and assessment with strengths across te reo Māori, mātauranga Māori, disability, learning support and culturally relevant content.

Office of the Hautū supports the Hautū (Deputy Secretary) and Senior Management across the group, facilitating effective business and communication processes with the group, across the Ministry, and into Ministers' Offices, and leading planning, budget, and reporting processes.
