The Principal Advisor, Communications & Engagement supports Te Mahau | Te Tai Runga which spans Te Whanganui-a-Tara, the South Island, Stewart Island and the Chatham Islands.


This role leads the planning and implementation of communications that tell the Te Mahau story to our staff and stakeholders in the takiwā.

This includes supporting strategic initiatives on leadership, engagement, culture, change communications, and events for the Hautū. It also includes support for strategic cross-Te Mahau projects or work streams requiring dedicated resource.

You will bring your communications and engagement knowledge, skills and experience to ensure Te Mahau | Te Tai Runga gives effect to the articles of te Tiriti.


You will bring with you:

  • Experience in building relationships and partnerships to achieve shared outcomes
  • Experience working in a communications role in a large and complex organisation
  • Understanding of the Treaty of Waitangi and its implications for the work of the Ministry of Education
  • Experience developing and implementing communications strategies and plans that encompass a broad spectrum of communications activities including: strategic communications, media/social media, stakeholder engagement, channels, internal and external communications
  • Demonstrated ability and experience working effectively within a political environment
  • Skilled or willing to strengthen your competency in te reo Māori, or a Pacific language
  • You will demonstrate knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an understanding of Te Ao Māori and promote tikanga and Te Reo Māori. You will also have knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an appreciation of te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) as it applies in the public sector
