We will work closely with iwi to ensure the best services and supports are available, to achieve the vision of better outcomes for tamariki and rangatahi in our care.

We need advocates that are empathetic to the needs of tamariki and rangatahi that will promote and utilise key services within health, education and social services.

Mō te tūnga | About the role

The Whānau Engagement Worker will be based at Mary Crescent in Lower Hutt to look at supportive needs for tamariki and rangatahi in our care.

In this role you would be working closely with the whānau, significant others, or other permanent carers to understand and support our tamariki.

The focus of this role is to identify positive solutions and encourage tamariki in our care to grow and develop.

This is done by working alongside whānau to learn about and implement behavioural change programme's for the young person throughout their placement and into post-placement transition.

You will assist whānau and help improve their techniques and responses when challenged by difficult behaviours. You will also help to strengthen their bond with their tamariki, and develop strategies to support positive behaviours.

You will utilise community resources and networks to explore development opportunities with whānau, to grow and build on their skills and knowledge.

You will also work closely with Social Workers to provide information that supports interventions and referrals to services that will grow the whānau's strengths.

Ngā pūmanawatanga ōu | What you will bring

  • Experience working with families/whānau and young people.
  • A tertiary psychology, social work, family therapist or other related qualification and relevant registration or experience with Māori models of family work including Whānau ora, Hau ora or Kaiawhina.
  • Knowledge of therapeutic family work, parent education theories and methodologies
  • Knowledge of, and established links to community networks, and experience in cross agency work with community service providers, other government departments, including work in multicultural environments.
  • Experience and understanding of operating in a multicultural environment as it relates to Tikanga Māori and Pasifika people.
  • Understanding of the statutory role and objectives of Oranga Tamariki.
  • Training will be provided, however, knowledge of behaviour dynamics and behaviour change strategies for young people will be an advantage.
  • A clean, current driver's licence is essential and a willingness to drive the Ministry's vehicles.

Oranga Tamariki offer an impartial remuneration package, that offers progression annually for experience through tenure. Annual remuneration for this position starts between $75,617 and $83,574 dependant on experience.
