Ko wai mātou | About Us

Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu (Te Kura) is New Zealand's largest school with a roll of up to 24,000 ākonga (students) at any point of time.

We provide personalised and authentic learning programmes through distance education from early childhood to NCEA Level 3, including to young adult and adult learners.

Our ākonga are at the centre of all we do.

Our vision is to enable our ākonga to achieve their educational and personal goals, empowering them to become engaged and contributing members of their communities.

Ki te tī, ki te tā, ki te katoa - Anytime, anywhere, anyone.

Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this position:

In 2021 the Government provided funding for Te Kura to support learners at risk of disengagement, who were disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 disruptions.

Te Kura set up an Enhanced Engagement and Wellbeing project (He Oranga Mahuru) to support these ākonga.

Working directly with ākonga the Kaiāwhina mentors, motivates, encourages, challenges and supports ākonga, individually and in small groups, as ākonga engage in learning activities as guided by the project lead or in region kaimahi.

The success of this program in 2021 has meant that further funding has been granted for 2023.

In the Kaiāwhina role you will work as part of a team to improve outcomes for these ākonga by re-engaging them with their learning, and/or to successfully transition on to further education, training or employment.

You will predominantly guiding and mentoring ākonga aged between 16 and 19.

Te Kura's vision is to enable our ākonga to achieve their educational and personal goals, empowering them to become engaged and contributing members of their communities.

Ko koe tēnei | About you:

We are looking for people with excellent interpersonal skills and an inclusive approach, able to quickly build rapport and trust with ākonga.

You will be expected to be aware of the health and safety requirements for working with ākonga outside the classroom and comply with the school's policies at all times.
