Environmental Ranger - Wetland Monitoring & Restoration

Join Our Team as aWai Tai, Wai Maori Kai mahi i te rohe

This is a 24-month fixed term position in the Far North of New Zealand. The role is 35 hours per week, over the 4 days per week of Monday to Thursday. The preferred start date is 1 July 2024.

You will be required to be located near Te Paki, Northland.

About Us

At Ngāti Kuri, we are committed to environmental stewardship and the protection of our land's most valuable ecosystems. Our Te Haumihi Programme, is a comprehensive capability advancement programme to grow our people in our place with long term ecological and environmental gains, delivering extensive landscape restoration in the Far North. The programme will support the restoration and protection of some of Aotearoa's most vulnerable tāonga species and habitats and will enable the establishment of biosecurity management across Te Haumihi and Te Ara Whānui which includes the very tip of the North, the Manawatawhi and Motuopao Islands, and surrounding marine environment.

Position Overview

As an Wai Tai, Wai Maori Kai mahi i te rohe specialising in wetland monitoring and restoration, you will play a critical role in safeguarding and enhancing our precious ecosystems. From conducting ecological assessments to implementing restoration projects, you will work tirelessly to ensure the health and vitality of wetland environments. Additionally, you will be responsible for preserving taonga and cultural sites, fostering meaningful relationships with indigenous communities, and promoting sustainable conservation practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive wetland assessments to evaluate ecological health and identify areas for restoration
  • Design and implement wetland restoration projects, including habitat enhancement, invasive species management, and erosion control measures
  • Monitor water quality parameters and assess the impact of human activities on wetland ecosystems
  • Collaborate with local communities, indigenous groups, and stakeholders to integrate traditional ecological knowledge and cultural values into conservation efforts
  • Preserve and protect taonga and cultural sites within wetland areas, ensuring their long-term integrity and significance
  • Assist in emergency response efforts, such as oil spills or natural disasters, to mitigate environmental damage and facilitate recovery

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in environmental science, ecology, natural resource management, or related field
  • Proven experience in wetland monitoring, restoration, and conservation initiatives
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders
  • Commitment to environmental sustainability, cultural preservation, and indigenous rights
  • Ability to self-manage and work autonomously
  • Clean full driver's license with the ability to operate off-road vehicles and watercraft, preferably with a Skippers licence
  • Strong swimming skills and comfort working in both freshwater and saltwater environments
  • Experience in Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping
  • PADI Open Water Diver scuba certification is desirable.
