Canterbury Health Laboratories (CHL) is a busy diagnostic facility providing services to inpatients and outpatients at Te Whatu Ora [Health NZ] Waitaha Canterbury.
You will be working for the largest medical laboratory in the South Island which is also a major secondary/tertiary referral centre with a varied and challenging caseload.
CHL has an immediate catchment of circa 600,000 with wider provision to circa 1.2 million. CHL also provides a national service for selected tests.
This is a full-time (40 hours per week, Monday to Friday) permanent position, based in the Specialist Chemistry Section at CHL, situated in central Christchurch.
If you have either experience in biochemistry OR are a new or recently graduated medical laboratory scientist, we want to hear from you.
The role is primarily based in the area of antenatal screening - a Ministry of Health - s National screening programme.
In addition to the laboratory analysis aspects, this role also has a customer focus, with regular interactions with midwives and clinical teams involved in the service.
The Specialist Chemistry section of CHL has a long-established expertise in development, analysis and clinical interpretation of routine and specialised assays.
We are looking for applicants with a qualification in biochemistry but will consider applicants from other specialties. Previous biochemistry experience would be an advantage, however full training will be provided.
You must be registered (or eligible for registration) with the New Zealand Medical Laboratory Sciences Council and hold a current Annual Practising Certificate.
The successful applicant will be a highly motivated team player with excellent interpersonal skills and attention to detail. In addition, you will possess effective time management skills and be able to work independently.If you have a passion for providing health care and great work ethic, we want to hear from you.

This role requires the following:
- A registered Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) preferably with a current practicing certificate or qualifications that would allow/lead to registration as an MLS
- Familiarity with laboratory processes, quality management (compliance with
ISO:
15189) and experience in a similar role
- Methodical and practical skills
- Attention to detail and accuracy skills
- Interpersonal and organisational skills
- Data entry experience
- Computer skills (Microsoft Office, Word, Outlook and Excel)
