The Whānau Hauora Integrated Response Initiative (WHIRI) was developed with a pro equity focus of providing health services and care to whānau accessing and re-engaging with the health system.

Developed with a kaupapa lens, for Māori by Māori, WHIRI is a critical service in mitigating unmet needs for Māori and Pacific patients who receive care from a hospital service.

WHIRI aligns with the highly successful Whānau Ora approach, focussing on the needs and goals of the whānau, centred on improving equity for Māori and other priority populations whilst being grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.


  • This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in the development of new ways of working in the health system, to address inequities within a research project and the Whānau Hauora Integrated Response Initiative (WHIRI) model of care:

Research title:
'The determinants of health for Māori mothers and adults with chronic diseases'

  • This role calls for an organised, passionate and driven individual with experience in research, excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently and within a team. This role will be working on one project arm of the research project; focussing on pregnant Māori wāhine in the Waikato. You will engage with patients and their whānau in conducting a needs based assessment and provide appropriate education, resources and referrals according to the needs identified. This programme of work will embrace Mātauranga Māori and Te Ao Māori in order to be effective for our Māori communities and fulfil our Te Tiriti obligations.

  • Required skills & experience you will need to be considered for this role:
  • Three years or more experience working with whānau Māori and Pasifika.-
  • Excellent communication skills.-
  • Empathy, ability and confidence to engage people from a range of backgrounds.-
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.-
  • Understanding of Tikanga Māori, Te Ao Māori and Mātauranga Māori and the ability to engage appropriately in Māori settings-
  • Experience conducting interviews or survey's with whānau or patients
