The Role | Te Tūranga

Join Hāpai Tūhono, the newly appointed provider of the Ministry of Education's Attendance Service for the Ōtara catchment.

We are a kaupapa Māori organisation deeply rooted in the South Auckland community, and with the new attendance contract, we will be working in close partnership with Māori and Pasifika communities to help tamariki, rangatahi and whānau reconnect with education, belonging and opportunity.

As a Kaiawhina Ākonga, you'll be part of the frontline team delivering this new Attendance Service - bridging the spaces between home, school and community.  You'll walk alongside whānau to rebuild trust, restore hope, and support ākonga back into meaningful learning pathways.

Your mahi will reflect both te ao Māori and Pasifika values such as vā, alofa and tautua, recognising that cultural connection, relationship, and whānau leadership are at the heart of lasting change.

You will:

  • Engage kanohi ki te kanohi with ākonga and whānau to understand barriers to school attendance
  • Co-design whānau-centred plans that reflect cultural values, strengths and aspirations
  • Provide consistent mentoring, encouragement and advocacy
  • Connect whānau to local supports and services for wellbeing, education and stability
  • Collaborate with Social Workers, Whānau Facilitators and schools to deliver wraparound support
  • Record and track progress in the Ministry's Case Management System (CMS)

This is a hands-on, community-based role, you'll be out in schools, homes, churches and community spaces across Ōtara, helping whānau re-engage with education and confidence.

About You | Mōu ake

You are a connector - empathetic, grounded, and passionate about empowering Māori and Pasifika whānau. You understand that every attendance story sits within a wider journey of culture, identity, and belonging.

You'll bring:

  • Experience in youth work, mentoring, education, social or community services
  • Deep understanding of Māori and Pasifika communities and cultural frameworks
  • The ability to build trust and maintain relationships with schools, whānau, and local networks
  • Respect for tikanga Māori and Pasifika values; whanaungatanga, manaakitanga, alofa and tautua
  • Flexibility to work some evenings or weekends when whānau are available
  • A full NZ driver's licence and a clear police check

Previous experience working in attendance or truancy services is not required but preferred.
