Rotorua Central, New Zealand Oranga Tamariki - Ministry for Children Full time NZ$26,000 - NZ$40,000 per year

Join the team at our Te Maioha Youth Justice Residence as a Casual Residential Youth Worker and take pride in knowing that the work you do every day makes a real difference to the lives of our tamariki. We are on the hunt for multiple casuals to join our team, ready for our Christmas period

Mō mātou | About us:

Te Maioha o Parekarangi Youth Justice Residence, just outside Rotorua, provides a safe, secure and supportive environment where rangatahi (young people) who have offended can make changes and get their lives back on track. It's a place where 13-17-year-olds accused of an offence stay to await court proceedings or serve a sentence. This means they are not free to leave. However, a residence is not a prison, and our Residential Youth Workers are not prison guards.

At all times we prioritise the safety and security of our tamariki and staff on site, however, we are committed to ensuring that the time tamariki spend in our residences will improve their prospects for the future. Our Residential Youth Workers are there to keep our tamariki safe, but they're also mentors, role models and coaches.

We offer a variety of interesting, educational, and fun activity programmes for our young people while they stay with us. A few examples of the activities we offer might include cooking classes, gaming and sports tournaments, vocational and cultural demonstrations, and lessons with leaders from the local community and much more

Mō te tūnga | About the role:

Our Residential Youth Workers enrich the lives of our tamariki and maximise learning opportunities and engagement with positive role models. They work alongside our partners to build high-trust relationships and help tamariki develop the skills, behaviours, and attitude they will need to meaningfully contribute to their whānau and their community. They understand that the causes of offending are complex, and that successfully dealing with young offenders demands action beyond simple punitive measures.

Guiding behavioural change is a massive task and means our kaimahi have many responsibilities, including:

  • Ensuring that a safe and secure environment is maintained for the benefit of the rangatahi, staff and the community
  • Supporting young offenders in their personal growth and rehabilitation with a focus on health, education, training and employment
  • Working with rangatahi to help them build and strengthen relationships with their whānau and communities and encouraging them to act on referrals to services

As a Casual, you will be required to cover the shifts of our Residential Youth Workers. This is not a 9 to 5 job - the successful candidate would be required to provide cover as and when required to support our permanent Residential Youth Workers staff and you could be asked to work any day of the week from Monday to Sunday, including Public Holidays.

We need candidates to start at our next induction date which is the 13th October 2025 Unfortunately, the nature of the role doesn't allow for any movement on starting later than this date

Ngā pūmanawatanga ōu | What you will bring:
