The Council provides a cycle safety programme for primary schools all over the city, helping tamariki build the skills and confidence to cycle.

While cycling is at the heart of what we teach, our team is made up of people with all kinds of backgrounds - what truly brings us together is a passion for supporting young people to grow, learn, and have fun. We're on the lookout for instructors who bring energy, warmth, and a genuine interest in helping kids feel capable and confident to help deliver our worthwhile Cycle Safe programme.

You're energetic, positive, and passionate about helping tamariki grow. Whether you come from teaching, early childhood, sports coaching, youth work, nannying, or any child‑focused role, you know how to engage kids, build their confidence, and keep things fun and safe.

You enjoy being active, can think on your feet, and you're comfortable working both as part of a supportive team and independently with your own small groups. You stay calm and adaptable when things get busy, make good decisions on the spot, and bring a reliable attitude to your work.

Cycling experience is a bonus - but not essential. What matters is your attitude, willingness to learn, and your natural way with kids.

This opportunity is part time between the hours of 8:45am and 3.00pm during primary schools terms. As a Cycle Safe Instructor you do not work during the school holidays but you may be required to attend any professional development sessions.

• Hours of work - 8:45am and 3.00pm during primary schools terms
• Position - Fixed term until July 2027
• Location - This position is primarily based at Te Hononga, Christchurch City Council Civic Offices
• Salary - The hourly rate for this position goes from $ $33.01 per annum based on a 40 hour week. Starting salaries will be based on knowledge, skills and experience the successful candidate brings to the role, and relativities both, within the immediate team and in the broader organisation for the same or similar roles.
