Senior Infrastructure Design Engineer

Location: Auckland but will consider a resource based in Wellington / Christchurch

We're looking for an experienced Senior Infrastructure Design Engineer to design and deliver enterprise-grade virtualised solutions for internal and external clients. This is a hands-on technical leadership role where you'll translate business requirements into scalable, resilient infrastructure architectures.

You'll bring deep expertise across compute, storage, virtualisation and data protection using VMware technologies such as vSphere, VCF, vSAN and NSX to create robust, high-performance environments.

What you'll be doing

  • Lead customer workshops to define technical and business requirements.
  • Architect enterprise virtualisation solutions using VMware (vSphere, ESXi, vCenter).
  • Develop technical proposals, architecture documentation, and implementation roadmaps.
  • Conduct capacity planning, sizing, and performance modelling for virtual environments.
  • Design and deploy scalable vSphere compute clusters with DRS, HA, and vMotion.
  • Implement VMware NSX for network virtualisation and micro-segmentation.
  • Design enterprise backup and recovery strategies using Veeam or Commvault.
  • Architect and deliver disaster recovery (DR) solutions using VMware SRM.
  • Ensure high availability and resilience through automated failover and fault-tolerant design.

What you'll bring

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience with the VMware stack (vSphere, vSAN, NSX).
  • Solid understanding of enterprise server hardware (Dell, HPE, Cisco UCS).
  • Strong knowledge of storage solutions (SAN, NAS, SDS) and related protocols (FC, iSCSI, NFS).
  • Proven experience with data protection and DR using tools like Veeam or Commvault.
  • Experience with other hypervisors (Hyper-V, KVM) is an advantage.
  • Strong documentation, stakeholder engagement, and technical presentation skills.
