DevonportTakapuna, New Zealand Basis Full time

About Us

At Basis, we're not just building a company — we're building the future. We're redesigning the electrical systems that power our homes to fight climate change, reduce household costs, and create a better future for generations to come. That means rethinking everything, not just what we build, but how we build it.

To do this, we need incredible people. People who are bold, creative, sharp, and thoughtful. People who care. People who move fast and think differently. That's where you come in.

The Role

We are seeking a highly autonomous Senior Infrastructure Engineer to lead the growth and optimisation of the AWS infrastructure supporting our ecosystem. As the main owner of our platform infrastructure, you will be at the heart of our technical operations, taking charge of our existing systems with the freedom to architect and implement significant improvements.

Some of the things that you might be involved in include:

  • Architect and Own AWS Infrastructure: Take full ownership of the design, deployment, and management of the Basis cloud ecosystem on AWS, ensuring it is secure, scalable, and cost-effective.
  • Drive Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Lead our IaC strategy by building and maintaining clean, reusable, and robust Terraform modules for all cloud resources.
  • Manage Container Orchestration: Administer and scale our Kubernetes clusters (EKS), managing the lifecycle of cluster components, networking, and containerised workloads.
  • Implement Cloud Security: Work with our security architect and security engineer to implement cloud security best practices, including managing IAM roles and policies, network security (VPCs, security groups), and data encryption.
  • Drive the Infrastructure Roadmap: Proactively identify performance bottlenecks, technical debt, and areas for improvement. Develop a forward-looking roadmap to ensure our platform remains scalable and resilient
  • Contribute to CI/CD Pipelines: Work with backend engineers to improve our continuous integration and deployment pipelines, empowering backend engineers to ship software rapidly and safely.
  • Develop the Observability Platform: Build and manage the core observability stack, providing the tools and frameworks that engineers use to instrument their applications for monitoring, logging, and alerting.
  • And more

In this role, you'll partner directly with our backend engineering team, building the platform and tools they need to be successful. We are looking for a proactive, seasoned problem-solver who is excited to not only maintain our current systems but also to strategically own the vision for our future platform. Your work will directly impact the reliability, performance, and security of our products as we grow.

About You

We think you'll be a fit for this role if you have the following skills/or traits:

  • 8+ years of hands-on experience in a Platform/Infrastructure Engineering role.
  • Strong, production-level experience managing Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform.
  • Proven experience with containerization (Docker) and orchestration (Kubernetes), preferably with a managed service like AWS EKS.
  • Experience with designing, building, and maintaining automated CI/CD pipelines using tools like GitHub Actions.
  • Proficiency in at least one scripting or programming language (e.g.,Python, Go, or Bash) for automation and building tooling.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with a demonstrated ability to work effectively with backend engineering teams.
  • Experience with modern observability and monitoring tools.

Some nice to haves include:

  • Experience with IoT
  • Knowledge of cloud security best practices, vulnerability management, and experience with compliance frameworks (e.g., SOC 2).
  • Experience with cloud cost management and optimisation strategies.

Research shows that while men apply for jobs when they meet ~ 60% of the job criteria, women and other marginalised groups tend to apply only when they check every box. So if you think you have what it takes, but are not sure you check every box, we still want to hear from you

Benefits

  • A competitive salary and employee share scheme (ESOP)
  • Unlimited annual leave so that you can take the time that you need to re-energise
  • Tools of trade, including laptop and headphone allowance
  • Flexible hours - we focus on outcomes, so adjust your day around whānau, hobbies, or other commitments.
  • A schedule of fun team events throughout the year (Lego Battlebots, table tennis, themed Friday drinks, and more)
  • Office dogs + steady supply of fresh fruit and snacks in the office
  • Access to Clearhead, our well-being programme which gives you 5x free sessions with a psychologist per year
  • A commitment to diversity and inclusion: Pride Committee and partnering with Pride Pledge, DEIB Committee, EEO Policy and well-being strategy
  • Parental leave policy that tops up wages to 100% for the primary caregiver for up to 22 weeks and up to 6 weeks for secondary caregivers (conditions apply)
  • The opportunity to learn and develop from some of the best and brightest minds in the industry
