The Department of Marine Science is a dynamic and multi-disciplinary Department committed to research, education and conservation of our marine environment. We run a BSc in Marine Science and currently have about 300 students enrolled in this Major.
The Department's main campus office is situated on Castle Street, where this position is based. Other facilities include the Portobello Marine Laboratory and New Zealand Marine Studies Centre at Portobello, several research vessels including the RV Polaris II, and remote field sites in Fiordland and Stewart Island.
The role|Te mahi
As a Teaching Fellow, you will work under the guidance of the academic leads responsible for two Oceanography papers within the BSc in Marine Science.
Your focus will be supporting learning and teaching in core Marine Science undergraduate papers. Specifically, those papers include but are not limited to\: MARI201 (Oceanography\: The Physical Ocean) and MARI322 (Coastal and Shelf Sea Oceanography).
Key tasks of this role include:
• Assisting in preparation of teaching material.
• Running laboratory sessions, tutorials and field trips.
• Managing laboratory, field and vessel bookings.
• Organising demonstrators and teaching materials.
• Assisting with course assessments and feedback to students.
• Compliance with health and safety standards.
Your skills and experience|Kā pūkeka me kā wheako
You will have aptitude for effective teaching at tertiary level, as well as:
• MSc degree or higher in Marine Science or related environmental / physical sciences or may hold or be studying for a postgraduate degree.
• Study or work experience in Oceanography (advantage).
• Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and independently.
• Proven ability to work with students and staff from differing academic and cultural backgrounds.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• A current driver's license
• A commitment to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and to diversity/equal opportunity.

This is a permanent, part time (0.5 FTE) position based in Ōtepoti, Dunedin.
The role is worked only during semester time (February–May and July–October, including two weeks prior to each semester), which corresponds to approximately 32.5 hours per week during those 16-week periods.
The salary range for this position is $75,727 to $87,849 per annum (pro rata).
