Whangarei Central, New Zealand Northland Regional Council Full time NZ$60,000 - NZ$80,000 per year

Biosecurity Officer - Check, Clean Dry Ambassadors. Full-time, fixed term – 6 months

Northland Regional Council's role is to care for and protect Te Taitokerau Northland's environment and communities. Does that resonate with you?

Ko te aha ā mātou mahi?  / What work do we do?

We work together with tangata whenua and communities to care for the incredible environment and many communities in our rohe, matching our skills and resources with the visions and aspirations of our people. We work to protect and restore healthy waters and our native taonga, through meaningful partnerships with tangata whenua and communities, and to build more resilient and adaptable communities in a changing climate. Here at Te Kaunihera ā rohe o Te Taitokerau | NRC, your mahi makes a real difference to our communities.

Toitū te whenua, toitū te moana, toitū te tangata. If the land is well, if the sea is well, the people will thrive.

Te āheinga / The opportunity

Join the front lines of freshwater protection in Te Taitokerau as a Check, Clean, Dry (CCD) Ambassador—a dynamic role where environmental advocacy meets community engagement. The role is fixed term for 6 months and you will work full-tme hours. You must have flexibility to work some weekends and public holidays.

As a CCD ambassador, you'll be the face of biosecurity across lakes, rivers, and local events, sparking conversations and inspiring action to stop the spread of aquatic pests. Whether you're chatting with jet ski enthusiasts at Lake Taharoa or leading interactive displays at Enviroschools, your mission is clear: educate, empower, and protect.

This role places you at the heart of a collaborative effort, working alongside kaimahi from Te Roroa, Te Kuihi, KDC, and DOC at the Lake Taharoa biosecurity checkpoint. Here, you'll inspect watercraft of all kinds—boats, kayaks, trailers—and ensure visitors are informed, certified, and surveyed. Your presence will help safeguard these precious ecosystems through hands-on inspections and watercraft washdowns, all while maintaining compliance with council guidelines.

If you're passionate about the environment and love connecting with people, this is your chance to make a real impact.

He kōrero mōu / About you

We're seeking a confident communicator with a passion for freshwater conservation and biosecurity, who thrives in public-facing roles and community engagement. A relevant science or biosecurity qualification would be a bonus but not essential. You will have a current full driver's licence and have the flexibility to travel across Te Taitokerau—including weekends and public holidays. A current first aid certificate would be an advantage, but training can be provided.

Tono mai / Apply

The mahi we do really makes a difference, so if you are motivated to help nurture our region's taiao, we are keen to learn more about you. Want to have a kōrero with us first, or just need more information? If so, contact our Biosecurity Manager – Incursions & Response, Nicky Fitzgibbon ).
