The Marae holds a unique significance as a cultural and historic hub for six of the eight iwi in Te Tauihu o te Waka a Maui, connected through their common tupuna Kaakati.
Delivering a range of social services, and kaupapa Māori based activities to the community for over 20 years. Our cultural values lead the day-to-day interactions with whānau, hapū and iwi as does our commitment to fostering a proactive approach to self-determination and wellbeing.
We are seeking Kaiāwhina Ākonga, a learning support assistant to tautoko rangatahi within the Alternative Education Program.
Mō te tūranga mahi - About the role
This part time fixed term position is delivered Monday to Friday over 28 hours per week and is available until 30th June 2026. Working closely with the lead educator you will provide assistance in the classroom that fosters rangatahi development through kauapapa Māori approaches. The ideal outcome is to support seamless reintegration into mainstream education or exploring alternative positive educational pathways.
Key responsibilities of this role are to:
- Provide education support,
- daily classroom planning, activities and behavioral management
- Assist with literacy numeracy, and academic tasks, test preparation etc
- Provide coaching, mentoring and pastoral care as required such as transportation
- Cultural and Life Skill Development
- Deliver kaupapa Māori based activities
- Rangatahi Engagement and Whānau support
- Build trusted relationships, attend whānau
- Program Planning and Evaluation
- Help develop, implement and evaluate projects
- Team and Resource Contribution
- Prepare, manage and maintain classroom and activity resources
- Reporting and Administration
Mōu - About you
To be effective in this role you will need to have experience working with rangatahi in education or youth development, with a strong understanding of te Ao Māori and kaupapa Māori approaches. Knowledge of iwi hapū and whānau dynamics in Te Tauihu with an understanding of issues impacting rangatahi, including social, health, economic and educational barriers.
Our ideal candidates will have:
- Excellent communication skills in both English and Te Reo Māori is desirable
- Confident in leading kaupapa Māori activities like mahi toi, waka ama
- Skills and competencies that align with the Ministry of Educations Teacher Aide Competency Framework
- Minimum NCEA level 3 or equivalent work / life experience
- Strong numeracy and literacy capabilities
- A team player
- Proficiency in MS applications and report writing
- A full clean driver's license
