Tauranga, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand Datacom Full time NZ$120,000 - NZ$180,000 per year

Our Why

Datacom works with organisations and communities across Australia and New Zealand to make a difference in people's lives and help them to use the power of tech to innovate and grow.

About the Role

Datacom is seeking a technically skilled Applications Development Manager with strong ERP domain expertise who can lead high-performing distributed engineering teams to deliver secure, scalable, and reliable applications. This is a strategic leadership role that blends technical expertise with people management, innovation, and service excellence. You'll be at the forefront of championing a modern SDLC with an AI-first mindset under clear guardrails – driving measurable improvements in quality, speed, and developer experience through responsible adoption of AI for code generation, reviews, testing, and documentation.  You'll be driving application development priorities, improving support delivery, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement and automation.

As the Applications Development Manager, you will oversee a talented team of developers and work closely with internal stakeholders to ensure our applications are robust, scalable, and aligned with business goals. You'll also play a key role in incident management, automation initiatives, and health and safety leadership.

Key Responsibilities

As the Applications Development Manager, you will:

  • Lead as a coaching-first manager: grow capability, enable autonomous teams, and remove systemic blockers.
  • Uplift skills and foster a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and sound engineering practices grounded in clear architectural patterns.
  • Transform the SDLC with an AI-first approach under defined guardrails and metrics (e.g., codegen, code reviews, testing, documentation).
  • Provide delivery leadership for application development streams, working in partnership with Product, Architecture, and Platform teams.
  • Be accountable for engineering quality, delivery health, and adherence to enterprise architecture standards and Datacom policies, including delivery timeframes.
  • You're experienced in managing remote and hybrid teams across locations and time zones, using clear goals, asynchronous practices, and outcome-focused metrics to maintain flow, quality, and cohesion.
  • Enable best-practice processes and high-quality delivery outcomes across teams.
  • Promote a health and safety culture aligned with Datacom's policies.

What you will bring:

  • A deep understanding of enterprise-grade applications, including advanced knowledge of programming and database design.
  • 10+ years of experience in software development, including 5+ years in IT leadership roles.
  • Proven experience in Agile and Scrum methodologies.
  • Experience working with sensitive and confidential information.
  • Advanced knowledge of programming languages and database design, including open-source technologies.
  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to communicate and present technical concepts clearly and align solutions with business goals.
  • Strong analysis and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, stakeholder management, and effective influencing skills
  • Ability to build and lead collaborative teams to achieve strategic goals.
  • Proficiency in major programming languages such as Cobol, C++, Visual Basic, .NET, XML, ASP, SQL, and others.
