Te Poari Kaimātai Hinengaro o Aotearoa | New Zealand Psychologists Board
Wellington | Permanent | 0.5 FTE
Help uphold public safety and professional standards in psychology across Aotearoa.
The New Zealand Psychologists Board (NZPB) is the Responsible Authority under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003 (HPCA Act). We protect public safety by ensuring psychologists are competent, ethical, and fit to practise.
We are seeking a highly experienced practitioner to join our Secretariat as a Psychology Specialist – Complaints & Conduct — a role that plays a key part in ensuring our competence, conduct, and complaints processes are robust, fair, and grounded in psychological best practice.
About the Role
Reporting to the Deputy Registrar & Legal Counsel, this role brings senior psychology expertise to the management of complaints, competence, conduct, and fitness-related matters.
You will support the end-to-end handling of cases by:
- Applying psychological knowledge to assess, analyse, and document complaints and competence concerns.
- Ensuring investigations and assessments are procedurally fair, transparent, and compliant with the HPCA Act.
- Preparing case documentation for Board Reviews, Competence Reviews, Practice Programmes, and disciplinary processes.
- Supporting the Complaints, Conduct and Fitness Committee, Professional Conduct Committees, Competence Review Panels, and specialist reviewers.
- Ensuring all decisions and records are accurate, consistent, and defensible.
- Supporting engagement with practitioners, complainants, and external agencies throughout case processes.
This role does not provide legal or practitioner advice; instead, it contributes specialised psychology practice knowledge to regulatory processes.
About You
You will be a senior psychologist with strong analytical and professional judgement, someone who is steady, objective, and confident navigating complex and sensitive matters.
You will bring:
- Registration as a psychologist with at least 7 years' post-registration experience.
- A strong background in clinical, counselling, or applied psychology.
- Experience with complaints management, investigations, or statutory processes (desirable but not essential).
- High-level written skills and an ability to produce clear, defensible reports.
- Emotional maturity and professionalism in challenging or sensitive situations.
- Proved capability to work both independently and collaboratively within a small, high performing team.
- A commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, cultural safety, and equitable regulatory practice.
Why Join Us?
- Contribute to meaningful regulatory work that directly supports public safety and public trust.
- Apply your psychology expertise in a unique, system-level role.
- Work within a collaborative, professional Secretariat committed to high-quality regulatory practice.
- Enjoy a flexible, part-time position (0.5 FTE).
Applications close 16 January 2026. We'll review as received and may progress/appoint before the closing date.
