Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About the role

This is your opportunity to become a VSA Volunteer to share your experience, skills and knowledge to serve and build capacity in Kiribati. Work alongside our local partner organisation to plan and create a brighter future for all.

We are looking for an experienced Nursing Education Mentoror someone with the right level of transferrable skills, who understands and shares the spirit of volunteering, with a keen interest in building capability in the Pacific (while embracing a new cultural experience).

The length of this assignment in Kiribati will be 12 months.

VSA will support you by funding and organizing your flights, visas, insurances, accommodation, living allowance and utilities while you are on assignment.

Ngā tino Pūkenga/Wheako – Essential skills/experiences for the role

If you are interested in this opportunity, below are some of the key skills and experiences that we're looking for.

• A Postgraduate qualification in Education or equivalent experience
• Experience mentoring instructors and being a "train the trainer"
• Knowledge and experience in the nursing sector

Important note: Due to our VSA funding requirements, our volunteers must be a NZ citizen or NZ Permanent Resident to progress further in our recruitment process.

Our Partner Organisation – Kiribati School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health ScienceThe KSONMHS is the only tertiary institute that offers training for Kiribati nurses, and it is a subsidiary of the Ministry of Health and Medical Services. The institute is crucial in the Kiribati health sector in training and producing qualified nurses and just recently, they are also offering post graduate trainings to upgrade the national nursing workforce.

The Assignment

There is a lack of qualified nursing instructors at the KSONMHS. To improve the quality of classroom education delivery we are seeking an experienced volunteer to help mentor the instructors of adult learners in lesson planning and delivery.

Our outcomes from this assignment are for the Kiribati School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Science instructors have the confidence to deliver quality education to their nursing and midwifery students and in turn, the Kiribati health sector will improve from qualified and capable nursing and midwifery graduates. 

The Country – Kiribati

The Republic of Kiribati ('kee-ree-bus'), formerly the Gilbert Islands, is a Micronesian country comprising 32 atolls and one raised phosphate island (Banaba), spread across all 4 of the world's hemispheres. Kiribati has a population of just under 120,000, half of whom live in the densely populated capital of South Tarawa.

The average height of the atolls is just over 2 metres above sea level, making Kiribati highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.

The mwaneaba (community house) is traditionally the centre of community life where community discussions, council meetings and celebrations occur, and important decisions are made.
