About us
Southern Cross Health Insurance is shaping a healthier Aotearoa New Zealand. Our purpose is simple: empowering our members to live well for longer. We're here to give peace of mind through timely access to quality care, inspire healthier living, and lead positive change across the health system. As a New Zealand-owned, member-based organisation, we're building a future where wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do -- delivering exceptional value for our members and creating an environment where our people thrive.
Now is an exciting time to join us. You'll be part of a high-performing, values-driven team where people are at the heart of everything we do -- and in return for your talent, you'll have the opportunity to grow, make an impact, and be proud of the difference your work makes.
About the role
Our Engineer (Data) plays a pivotal role in shaping our data platform infrastructure and processes. You'll work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure our data systems are highly available, scalable, and reliable.
As part of the Platform Engineering team, you'll contribute to impactful outcomes while gaining exposure to a broad range of technologies and practices.
Key responsibilities will include:
Designing, building, and maintaining robust ELT/ETL pipelines using Azure Data Factory, dbt Cloud, and Snowflake
Writing complex, high-performance SQL queries across platforms including SQL Server and Oracle
Developing scalable data warehousing solutions with a focus on modularity, reusability, and re-run-ability
Collaborating across teams to troubleshoot and resolve complex data challenges in a regulated environment
Conducting data profiling, implementing test automation, and maintaining high-quality documentation
Supporting both relational and NoSQL storage systems through thoughtful data model design
Applying Agile, DevOps/DataOps, and Platform Engineering best practices to build secure, resilient data pipelines
Monitoring and improving observability metrics such as data accuracy, availability, reliability, and quality
Defining and tracking key performance indicators to measure and enhance solution effectiveness
Embedding Data as a Product principles to ensure data sets and pipelines meet stakeholder needs, with clear ownership, quality standards and lifecycle management
About you:
Hands-on experience with Snowflake, Azure Data Factory, dbt Cloud, and Azure Cloud services
Strong SQL skills, with the ability to write and optimise complex queries across multiple platforms
Solid understanding of data warehousing, data modelling, and ELT/ETL pipeline development
Familiarity with observability frameworks and quality assurance practices for data products
Exposure to platform engineering principles and modern software development environments
Our values who we are and what's important to us.
Ngākau nui. Āhurutanga. Tikanga.
Join a team that's always there, always real, always true. If you thrive in a purpose-driven, diverse and supportive culture, we think you'll love working with us.
What we offer you
five days of wellbeing leave per year (pro-rated for part-timers)
health insurance for you and your immediate whānau
life insurance cover and discounts on pet and travel insurance
extra parental leave benefits and financial wellbeing support
ability to participate in our workplace wellbeing programme.
