Ko wai mātou - About us:

Job Description

He aha te tūranga - About the role:

It's easy to become isolated when partners and friends pass on or when family members don't live close by. And if you're unable to get out or you're unwell, it can be hard to meet people. Just having someone ask about your day can make all the difference to how you're feeling. Looking forward to a good conversation can really brighten up the day.

Our Caring Caller programme is a telephone friendship service. We match volunteers with clients around the country who would benefit from regular connection.

Our specialty teams specifically support members of your own community, and as part of our Samoan team, you can connect with your client in either Samoan or English.

  • Connect people who need a friend with people who have time to listen and chat
  • Call clients regularly to offer support and a friendly voice over the phone

Please note, this is an unpaid voluntary position.

Qualifications

Ko wai koe - About you:

What skills and training do our volunteers have?

People who become Caring Callers understand the need for care and want to make a difference to someone's life. They have the time to make regular calls and build a friendship. Hato Hone St John provides training and ongoing support to all our volunteers.

If you would like to make a unique and valuable contribution to your community and feel you have the following qualities, then we would like to hear from you:

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Sensitivity towards those who are sick
  • A friendly, caring and compassionate personality
  • A genuine interest in the well-being of others

New volunteer vacancies arise on a needs basis as requests from new clients come in.  Your details will be held on file until a vacancy opens in your area, at which point your local team will be in touch to organise an interview and relevant paperwork.

Successful applicants will receive full training and membership of Hato Hone St John (which gives free ambulance service for immediate family).
