We are a New Zealand–registered and fully licensed professional auction house providing both online and on-site auction services. The company operates a proprietary online auction platform supporting real-time bidding, absentee bidding, and auction result tracking. Our integrated "online + live auction" model enables secure, efficient participation for buyers across multiple auction categories, including fine wines, art, and collectible assets.
Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled Developer Programmer to support the ongoing development, enhancement, and maintenance of the company's proprietary online auction platform. This role plays a key part in ensuring the reliability, performance, and scalability of a live transactional system that supports real-time bidding, online user engagement, and back-office operations.
Working within a small and experienced technical and operations team, the Developer Programmer will translate business requirements into technical solutions, contribute to system architecture decisions, and deliver secure, well-documented software to support the company's continued growth.
Key Responsibilities
Design, develop, maintain, and enhance the company's online auction platform and related software applications.
Interpret business requirements, technical designs, and system workflows, translating functional specifications into reliable and efficient application code.
Develop and maintain front-end components using ReactJS, delivering responsive and user-friendly interfaces for auction listings, real-time bidding, and user account management.
Build, modify, and optimise back-end functionality supporting core auction processes, including bidding logic, transaction handling, and auction result processing.
Develop and maintain data processing modules using MySQL, MongoDB, and Elasticsearch to support auction data, bidding records, search functionality, and reporting.
Integrate third-party services such as payment gateways, notification systems, and internal reporting tools through well-structured APIs.
Participate in system architecture design, code reviews, testing, and performance optimisation to ensure system stability and scalability.
Support cloud-based deployment and system operations (e.g. AWS or similar environments), assisting with application releases and ongoing system monitoring.
Ensure software security, data integrity, and technical documentation standards are met, contributing to long-term system maintainability and compliance.
Required Skills & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field
- Proven experience as a Developer Programmer or Software Developer
- Strong proficiency in web application development (front-end and/or back-end)
- Experience with database design and management (e.g. MySQL, PostgreSQL or similar)
- Familiarity with real-time systems, transactional platforms, or e-commerce solutions
- Understanding of system security, data protection, and performance optimisation
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently
Preferred Experience
- Experience developing online auction, bidding, or marketplace platforms
- Knowledge of cloud hosting environments and deployment workflows
- Experience working in small, agile technical teams
What We Offer
- Opportunity to play a key role in the upgrade of a live commercial auction platform
- Stable, growing business with long-term development roadmap
- Competitive salary based on experience
- Supportive team environment with direct involvement in system architecture decisions
