Our Head Office is based in Ngaaruawaahia, just 10 minutes North of Hamilton. Satellite service centres are based in Tuakau, Te Kauwhata and Raglan, so with no traffic or parking issues, your journey to and from work is stress free.

About this role:
We are seeking a passionate and motivated Animal Control Officer to join our southern team based in Ngaaruawaahia. In this role, you will carry out animal control responsibilities through education, engagement, and enforcement. This position will be fixed term for 12 months and you must be available to be on call (weekends) on a rotation within the team. You'll help ensure that our community is safe, our bylaws are upheld, and that people and animals are treated with respect and care.
What will I do?
- Be committed to maintaining a safe environment across our district for the public, dog owners, children, and visitors. This includes promoting responsible dog ownership through engagement, education, and enforcement, while ensuring that all legislative requirements—such as the Dog Control Act, Waikato District Council Dog Control Bylaw, and Dog Control Policy—are applied consistently and professionally.
- Responding to dog-related matters, we prioritise service requests involving roaming livestock and conduct thorough investigations in accordance with strict legal standards.
- Building strong relationships with team members and across departments is essential to delivering services in a consistent and supportive manner.
- Treating all customers with fairness and respect, aiming to build trust, confidence, and cooperation.
- Accurate record-keeping and timely reporting are also key responsibilities, as is taking reasonable care to protect the health and safety of ourselves and others.
What I bring?
- Previous experience in a similar role or industry, with skills in safely handling animals, especially dogs and livestock.
- Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Suite, capable of accurately documenting information in relevant systems is essential for this role.
- Strong interpersonal and customer relationship skills, who is confident to effectively engage with people from varied backgrounds and situations.
- Confident with managing conflict and investigating issue that may arise.
- Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities is relevant to the role.
- You will be calm, fair and have an assertive approach to enforcement and education, with the ability to understand legislation relevant to animal control, animal welfare, impounding and local government.
- Understanding of, or a willingness to learn about, te ao Māori and tikanga.
- Current full driver's licence

Hours of work: Fixed term 40 hours per week
