The Role: Matua (Cultural Leader)
We are seeking two part-time Matua to provide cultural leadership, guidance, and support to our organisation and to the people we serve.
You'll play a vital role in ensuring Fonua Ola continues to deliver culturally safe, authentic, and effective services for Pasifika communities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Champion and uphold the vision and mission of the Trust.
- Embed and affirm Pasifika cultural best practice across service delivery.
- Provide cultural leadership that reflects integrity, mana, and respect for all Pasifika clients, families, and staff.
- Build strong relationships with government agencies, Pasifika groups, and community organisations.
- Promote ongoing education and training to enhance cultural competency and knowledge within Fonua Ola.
About You
To be successful in this role, you will:
- Have deep cultural knowledge of Pacific languages, customs, and spirituality.
- Be confident speaking a traditional Pacific language in public settings — offering Lotu, blessings, welcomes, and Talanoa.
- Hold Matua, Matai, or Chief leadership status within your Pasifika community.
- Be able to apply Pasifika health and wellbeing models in practice, supporting clients through culturally grounded approaches.
- Ideally hold a qualification in Mental Health & Addictions, Social Work or Community Work.
- Hold a clean, current driver's licence.
