Job Description - Founding Principal of Altum Academic Intermediate and Secondary School - Wellington, New Zealand

Altum Academy is a new charter school due to open in Wellington, in February 2026.

Altum will follow a classical education model of education. This model derives its structure and purpose from the seven liberal arts of ancient education, and includes the Western Canons of classical literature, the fine arts, the study of Latin and Greek, and the history and philosophy of ancient and Western civilization.

Through its classical approach, Altum will prioritise:

  • A positive and learning focused school culture, grounded in Judeo-Christian values
  • Community partnerships
  • Opportunities for students to engage in music and sports
  • Additional, targeted, literacy programmes for students who require extra support
  • The teaching of te reo Māori
  • Affordable transport options which enable students from across the Wellington region to attend

The school premises will include 8 classrooms, a library, a school hall and generous storage facilities and sports grounds. The students will be Years 7-9 initially, with the roll growing incrementally until 2030 when it will become a full composite school for Years 7-13.

The role is based in Wilton, Wellington, New Zealand. There may be short-term accommodation onsite, as well as a generous remuneration package.

We are seeking an inspirational and committed leader to take up the position of Founding Principal as soon as possible.

In this role, you will be responsible for:

  • Further development of the school's vision
  • Strategic planning and the development of school policies
  • Recruitment, mentoring and supervision of the teaching team
  • The implementation of a classical curriculum
  • Community partnerships
  • Establishing and maintaining a positive and learning focused school culture

We are looking for a leader who:

  • Has outstanding leadership skills
  • Has the confidence and vibrancy to lead and mentor a new teaching team
  • Has proven experience building strong relationships with staff, students and parents
  • Values academic excellence and high standards for the conduct of staff and students

Skills and qualifications required:

  • Proven success in senior management roles, in schools New Zealand or overseas
  • An understanding of, and commitment to, the classical model
  • Tertiary or post-graduate-level qualifications in a subject relevant to the classical curriculum
