Job Description
Te Whiwhinga mahi | The Opportunity
At Contact, we're on a mission to create a better New Zealand—one where decarbonisation and wellbeing go hand in hand. Our people are at the heart of everything we do, and we're looking for a Health & Safety Lead to champion safe, healthy, and mentally well outcomes across our South Island generation assets.

You'll be the connector, coach, and champion for our South Island Health & Safety Advisors—empowering them to support our front-line teams and helping us all navigate the complexities of operational work. Here's a few things that will help you get a feel for what you'll be driving:

Leading and Developing the Team:
Provide people leadership, coaching, and development for Health & Safety Advisors, ensuring they're equipped to deliver on our H&S objectives.

  • Exploring Everyday Work: Encourage Advisors to spend time on work fronts, understanding how work is really done and where systems or resources need improvement.
  • Stakeholder engagement: Working with our South Island leaders to build their understanding of great H&S leadership so they can empower their teams to deliver safe work outcomes.
  • Supporting and Influencing Work Practices: Develop and lead health and safety processes for all South Island generation sites, building capability and balancing resources for safe, dependable performance.
  • Facilitating Information Flow: Enhance collaboration across all levels, breaking down boundaries and ensuring critical H&S information is shared and acted upon.
  • Predicting and Responding to Risk: Work with Advisors and operational teams to identify and proactively address areas of uncertainty and risk.
  • Fostering Learning and Improvement: Promote learning from both everyday work and unexpected events, facilitating learning teams and supporting effective H&S training and inductions.
  • Providing Expert Advice: Act as a subject matter expert, offering practical guidance to Advisors, operational leaders, and teams.
  • Championing Process Safety: Encourage a questioning attitude about what could go wrong and support Advisors in process safety awareness.
  • Supporting Renewable Growth Projects: Provide H&S support for South Island development or construction projects as needed.
  • Ensuring Compliance and Best Practice: Oversee compliance with the Health and Safety at Work Act and other regulations, supporting Advisors in maintaining up-to-date knowledge of industry rules and best practices.

Representing the South Island: Act as the interface between South Island and North Island H&S teams and the Corporate H&S function, ensuring alignment and sharing learnings.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and develop a team.
  • Working knowledge of process safety and its application in operational settings.
