About the study
This new position offers an experienced researcher a unique opportunity to contribute to work at the forefront of system transformation. The role sits within the Curriculum Insights and Progress Study, a Ministry of Education-funded collaboration between Otakou Whakaihu Waka (University of Otago) and the Rangahau Matauranga o Aotearoa | New Zealand Council for Educational Research (NZCER).
The study is grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is committed to elevating matauranga Maori as a vital source of knowledge and insight. It supports a genuinely bicultural approach to education, ensuring that Maori perspectives, aspirations, and approaches to learning are authentically embedded throughout the research.
The Curriculum Insights and Progress Study has three key components: learning area assessments, foundation assessments, and a research panel of schools. Each year, the study assesses two of the eight New Zealand Curriculum learning areas with students in Years 3, 6, and 8, using rich assessment tasks administered by trained Kairangahau Kaiako (Teacher Researchers) in 160 schools across the country. Foundation assessments track progress in reading, writing, and maths through annual online assessments, providing national data on achievement over time. A panel of 40 schools contributes additional insights, enabling the study to pilot innovative tools and provide timely feedback on curriculum implementation and student learning.
This work is important for Aotearoa and Te Waipounamu because the study has a unique focus on developing insights that can be used to enable and support system improvement. These include supports for kaiako to improve teaching and learning.
Come and be a part of this unique opportunity to contribute to a kaupapa that aims to reshape how we understand progress and success in Aotearoa's education system, centring equity, honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and ensuring all tamariki are valued and supported in their ao ako, learning journeys.
