The University of Otago, Wellington (UOW) provides health research and teaching in New Zealand's capital city. It maintains collaborative relationships with local health service providers, multiple central and local government agencies, including the Ministry of Health and the Wellington City Council, as well as other tertiary education providers such as Massey University and Victoria University. It also has strong links with local iwi.
World of Difference | He Ao Whakatoihara kore is an award-winning teaching and research programme run through the Department of Psychological Medicine at the University of Otago, Wellington, fully led and delivered by those with lived experience of mental distress. We deliver a comprehensive contact-based programme within medical student education through to psychiatric registrar training, focused on ending discrimination and promoting recovery and respect for human rights. We also undertake lived experience-led and co-produced research.
The role | Te mahi
The Teaching Fellow – Programme Coordinator supports the World of Difference | He Ao Whakatoihara kore Programme Lead by assisting with a wide range of teaching and coordination tasks. This includes contributing to the delivery of a unique, service user-led education programme that promotes recovery, inclusion, and respect for people experiencing mental distress.
Grounded in evidence-based research, the programme actively challenges discrimination and fosters understanding through a variety of learning formats. These include short talks, full and half-day workshops, assessed teaching sessions, and placements with lived experience-led organisations. The role also involves engaging with external collaborators such as healthcare providers, tertiary institutions, and other community partners.

This role is specific to someone with lived experience of mental distress.
To be successful in the role you will:
- Hold a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, at least.
- Proactive and willing to take initiative.
- Ability to work independently and as a team member.
- Be able to write and present information in a meaningful way that others can clearly understand.
- Be able to prioritise and keep track of work, as well as establish and maintain relevant and accurate records.
- Familiarity with common word processing, spreadsheet, visual presentation, and other relevant software.
- Experience of tertiary teaching.
- Open about aspects of own lived experience.
- Relevant knowledge of te reo Māori me ōna tikanga or willingness to learn.
- Demonstrated understanding of Te Tiriti and commitment to progressing the Te Tiriti journey of the World of Difference | He Ao Whakatoihara kore.
Further Information | Pūroko
This is a part-time (0.3FTE), permanent position, located in Wellington.
The salary range for this position is Teaching Fellow, $75,727 to $87,849 per annum. As a part-time position, the salary range for this role will be the pro-rata equivalent of the annual full-time salary range listed.
