Principal CAD Civil / Structural Draftsperson

Damwatch Engineering Ltd is a specialist consultancy focused on dams, hydraulic structures, and associated infrastructure. We provide strategic engineering and dam safety services for projects across New Zealand and internationally.

We are seeking a Principal CAD Civil / Structural Draftsperson to lead our drafting capability. This is a senior technical leadership role for someone passionate about mentoring, developing talent, and driving excellence in CAD workflows and 3D modelling for complex infrastructure projects.


About the Role

You will:

  • Take a hands-on approach, leading by example.
  • Provide technical leadership to support and grow our CAD team, fostering technical excellence and career development.
  • Establish and maintain CAD standards, workflows, and best practices across the organisation.
  • Drive innovation in 3D modelling, BIM integration, and visualisation for civil and structural infrastructure.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers and project managers to ensure seamless design-to-construction delivery.
  • Support strategic initiatives to scale CAD capability and adopt emerging technologies.

What We're Looking For

Ideally, you have:

  • 7+ years' experience in civil engineering projects (dams, canals, hydraulic structures, bridges, heavy civil works).
  • Proven leadership experience in mentoring and supporting CAD teams.
  • Strong proficiency in AutoCAD, Civil3D, Revit, and ArcGIS, plus advanced 3D modelling skills.
  • Expertise in steel and rebar detailing and construction drawing management.
  • Knowledge of NZ building codes and standards.
  • Ability to work strategically and autonomously while meeting deadlines.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Bonus: Experience with AutoLISP routines, BIM workflows, and road alignment design.

Preferred Qualification:

  • Recognised technical qualification in civil engineering/drafting or equivalent.
