Āu Mahi | What You Will Do
We have an opportunity for a Workshop Training Tutor, whose technical expertise and commitment to safety will help mentor students in developing the essential practical skills that underpin successful engineering careers.=
As the Workshop Training Tutor, you will deliver high-quality, safety-focused mechanical workshop training to undergraduate engineering students. You will play a pivotal role in building student confidence and technical capability through expert instruction and supervision, as well as deliver engaging, hands-on workshop practice courses covering the safe use of mechanical engineering tools and machinery. Above all, you will foster a culture of respect, inclusion, and collaboration aligned with UC's values and Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
This is an academic year position where you will work from the beginning of Term 1 (February) to the end of Term 4 (October).
Mōu | Who You Are
You are an experienced mechanical workshop technician with a passion for teaching and mentoring emerging engineers. You bring strong practical knowledge, attention to detail, and a proactive approach to health and safety in a workshop environment. You will also bring:
- A minimum of 7 years' experience in a mechanical workshop environment.
- Advanced practical skills in drilling, milling, turning, grinding, welding (MMA), and hand-tool use.
- Sound knowledge of Health and Safety practices and workshop management.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to encourage and support students of all skill levels.
- Proven ability to work independently on complex technical or manufacturing projects.
- A genuine enthusiasm for education, mentoring, and sharing hands-on expertise.
- Experience with MIG welding, gas plant, or prior teaching/training in a workshop environment, is desirable.
- A National Certificate (NZQA Level 4) in mechanical engineering (machining/toolmaking) or equivalent qualification - is required.
