About the Role

We are looking for an experienced dietitian to join our team of dynamic renal dietitians. The role is based at the Regional Renal Centre located on the Waikato Hospital campus, with regular visits to centres in other districts to provide clinical support. You will be working in a supportive team to provide outpatient nutrition care for renal patients in Hamilton and across Te Manawa Taki region. The role may also include some inpatient ward work. Working as part of a close-knit team, you will be supported with regular supervision and opportunities for professional and service development, as well as encouraged to develop your skills and professional interests. This position is a part time (24 hours per week) fixed term position for 1 year to cover parental leave.

Due to current skill mix within the team, we are looking for a dietitian with at least 2 years of clinical experience, and preferably experience working with renal nutrition. Unfortunately, new graduate dietitians will not be considered for this position.

Key responsibilities:

  • Undertake comprehensive nutrition assessment
  • Facilitate effective nutrition education and counselling, including self-management strategies to encourage active health participation.
  • Work closely with other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive care and facilitate coordinated treatment plans.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, including assessments, progress notes, and treatment plans, in compliance with health regulations and confidentiality standards.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development through training, workshops, and staying updated with the latest dietetic practices and evidence-based research to ensure high-quality patient care.

About the Team / Service

Our dietetic team includes approximately 30 dietitians and three dietitian assistants working across acute, community, outpatient and renal services. Our Waikato dietetic service covers a large geographical area; we provide care at Waikato Hospital, a large tertiary teaching hospital, as well in our smaller rural hospitals: Tokoroa, Taumarunui, Te Kuiti and Thames Hospitals.

Allied Health is a department that provides Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Speech & Language Therapy, Dietetic, Audiology & Newborn Hearing screening, Social Work, and Psychology services. Staff within these professions are all involved in direct client care and work in a wide range of situations to improve the health and well-being of the people they work with. Allied Health staff work in partnership with individuals and their family/whānau to facilitate relationships and a smooth journey through the healthcare system.

About you

As the ideal person for this role, you will have the following skills and attributes.

  • New Zealand Dietitians Board registration and current annual practising certificate (or in the process of obtaining), with Dietitians Prescriber status.
  • A minimum of 2 years experience working as a dietitian, ideally including experience with renal nutrition.
  • A commitment to achieving excellent health outcomes and empathetic patient care.
  • An ability to work autonomously.
  • A strong team focus, and excellent communication and inter-personal skills.
  • A full clean New Zealand drivers license.
  • Cultural competence and a commitment to cultural safety and equity:
  • Understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its application in healthcare.
  • Awareness of Mātauranga Māori and Kaupapa Māori approachesor a willingness to learn
