We specialise in cultivating and harvesting premium oysters, offering immersive harbour tours, and serving fresh local seafood through our takeaway shop. Our mission is to share the stories, culture, and beauty of Ōhiwa while delivering high-quality experiences for our manuhiri (visitors).

Te Mahi / The Role

The Marketing & Communications Assistant will support the execution of Tio Ōhiwa's seasonal marketing activities, focusing on digital content creation, social media engagement, and customer communications. This role is ideal for a creative, motivated person who enjoys storytelling through visuals, has an eye for detail, and can balance creative work with organisation and communication.

This is a hands-on role suited to a recent graduate or student looking to gain experience in marketing within the tourism and hospitality industry.

Responsibilities:

Content Creation & Social Media

  • Capture and edit engaging photos and videos to create reels, stories, and posts for social media (Instagram, Facebook, TikTok).
  • Write captions, schedule posts, and maintain a consistent brand voice across platforms.
  • Monitor social media pages daily, responding to comments, messages, and tagged posts in a timely and friendly manner.
  • Collaborate with the wider team to highlight tours, special events, and fresh seafood promotions.

Marketing Execution

  • Assist in delivering the seasonal marketing plan and campaigns across digital and print channels.
  • Help design and distribute posters, flyers, and other promotional materials (Canva or similar tools).
  • Support paid ad campaigns (Facebook, Instagram, Google) under supervision.

Customer Communication

  • Respond to social media and website enquiries about tour bookings and direct them to the correct booking channel.
  • Create and send monthly email newsletters to our subscriber list (via Mailchimp or similar).
  • Track customer feedback and social engagement metrics for reporting.

General Marketing Support

  • Assist with photo and video shoots for new tour products or events.
  • Keep marketing folders, content libraries, and branding assets organised.
  • Attend and capture content at events, tours, or wānanga as needed.

Skills & Experience Required:

  • Strong computer literacy (Google Workspace, Canva, Meta Business Suite, etc.).
  • Experience in creating and editing short-form video content (reels, TikToks, etc.).
  • Confident written and verbal communication skills.
  • Basic photography or design skills (advantageous but not essential).
  • Previous experience or study in Marketing, Communications, Tourism, or Media is preferred.
  • Able to work both independently and collaboratively within a small, dynamic team.

Working Conditions:

  • Primarily based at Ōhiwa Harbour and office in Whakatāne township with flexibility for remote work when applicable.
  • Must be available weekends or evenings occasionally during busy periods or special events.
  • Fixed term from November to Mid-February (approximately 4-5 months), 30 hours a week.
