About Us
Te Rourou Whakatipuranga o Awarua is a licensed kaupapa Māori, marae-based early childhood centre committed to nurturing tamariki through culturally responsive education. We uphold whānaungatanga, manaakitanga, and kaitiakitanga as guiding values and are committed to embedding the Rūnaka Kahu Ariki Vision across our centre.

The Role
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Centre Coordinator to lead the day-to-day operations. This role will report to the General Manager of Te Rūnaka o Awarua Incorporated, and requires someone who can coordinate centre rosters, work alongside kaiako and kaiawhina, and support operational and HR functions, while fostering strong relationships with whānau and the wider community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee and run the day-to-day operations of the centre.
  • Coordinate staff rosters and support kaiako and kaiawhina in their roles.
  • Support kaiako to deliver a bicultural and inclusive curriculum, embedding Te Whāriki, the Kahu Ariki Vision, and the rūnaka-wide Te Reo Strategy.
  • Promote and model whānaungatanga, manaakitanga, and kaitiakitanga within the centre and wider marae community.
  • Maintain strong connections with marae, hapū/mana whenua, and whānau to ensure cultural alignment and engagement.
  • Organise and lead monthly staff hui and support professional growth of kaimahi.
  • Oversee operational matters, including van and excursion management, health and safety, and facility maintenance.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, policies, and ECE standards.
  • Knowledge of running Infocare ECE systems is advantageous.

What We're Looking For

  • Proven leadership experience in early childhood education, preferably in a kaupapa Māori setting.
  • Te Reo Māori medium to intermediate level, with a high level of spoken Te Reo and accurate pronunciation, and motivation to share the language, implement it in daily practice, and support tamariki and staff to learn. Candidates with higher competency may also teach and model Te Reo within the centre, and those wishing to further develop their reo are encouraged to apply.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its practical application within an early childhood education setting.
  • Enthusiastic about working within a kaupapa Māori context, actively supporting, modelling, and promoting tikanga with tamariki, kaimahi, and whānau.
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal and communication skills, fostering clear, respectful, and collaborative relationships with tamariki, whānau, kaimahi, Advisory Kōmiti, and the wider community. Uses communication as a tool to model leadership, guide practice, and build a positive, inclusive, and culturally responsive environment.
  • Exceptional organisational and time-management skills, with a strong sense of order, able to coordinate day-to-day operations, staff rosters, and centre systems effectively.
  • Ability to foster a positive, collaborative, and inclusive environment.
  • Flexibility and commitment to participate in community and marae events, including pōwhiri and waiata.

Why Join Us
This is a significant leadership role within a vibrant marae-based centre. You will have the opportunity to shape the learning environment, mentor and support kaimahi, and actively contribute to the revitalisation of te reo Māori and tikanga in a kaupapa Māori educational setting.
