Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role
We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Health Social Worker to work in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Women - s Health and Maternity inpatient services at Wellington Hospital. The Social Worker responds to a range of referrals for patients and whānau including trauma, child protection, family violence, grief and loss and complex social issues and medical needs. The role works alongside two other social workers.
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) treat and care for babies born after 23 weeks gestation and up to full term babies who are unwell or any newborn/neonatal infant requiring surgery. As this is a regional service babies throughout the Central Region of New Zealand can be admitted to NICU. The role holder supports parents and caregivers with their adjustment to having a premature baby or a baby with a significant health issue. This role works in partnership with the NICU team and liaises with external agencies to provide care and support for babies and whānau after they discharge from the unit. The role includes providing support to caregivers and whānau when their baby is at the end of their life.
Women - s Health includes treating women during the antenatal and postnatal period or requiring gynaecological treatment. The successful applicant will complete psycho social assessments and work in partnership with woman and their whānau to focus on the wellbeing and safety of their pēpi. Close working relationships are required with health professionals in the service and external agencies to facilitate supportive discharges from hospital. On occasions this role supports women and whānau who have experienced a still birth.
The role will cover into the Paediatric Services and other areas of the hospital as required. And provide social work throughout Wellington Hospital for 6 hours on Saturdays on a roster, approximately 3-4 times a year paid at penal rates.

We are a team of 23 social workers based at Wellington Hospital who provide a service to patients and their whānau across inpatient, outpatient and community settings. We complete psycho social assessments across the age range and provide holistic social work interventions. This role is well supported by the other Paediatric, Neonatal and Women - s Health Social Workers in the team. Come and join our friendly experienced team in a supportive workplace environment.
