The Opportunity | Te āheinga
As a City Safe Compliance Officer, you’ll play a key role in promoting public safety, environmental care and community wellbeing across our district. You’ll be responsible for enforcing key legislation including the Freedom Camping Act, Litter Act, Land Transport Act and Local Government Act through proactive patrolling, public education and issuing infringements.
This is a highly collaborative role, working alongside enforcement agencies, social services, and engaging with a wide range of community members - from business owners and retailers to freedom campers and rough sleepers. You’ll also act as an ambassador for NPDC, using respectful communication and conflict resolution to de-escalate inappropriate behaviour and foster a safe, welcoming environment for all.
Key Responsibilities | Ngā haepapa matua
Ensure compliance with key legislation and Council policies, including the Freedom Camping Act, Litter Act, and Local Government Act.
Monitor public spaces and issue infringement notices for illegal camping, littering, parking violations, and other bylaw breaches.
Educate the public on responsible camping, waste disposal, and local regulations to promote environmental awareness.
Respond to complaints and investigate issues such as illegal dumping, abandoned vehicles, and disruptive behaviour.
Collaborate with enforcement agencies and social services to support community safety and vulnerable individuals.
Enforce trespass notices and de-escalate disruptive behaviour using respectful communication and conflict resolution.
Maintain accurate records and provide reports or evidence to Police and other agencies as required.
Support event operations through monitoring and parking enforcement at festivals, concerts, and other public gatherings.
Essential Skills and Experience | Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako
Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in a compliance, enforcement, or regulatory role such as corrections, security, or policing.
Training in de-escalation techniques or conflict resolution is preferred (CERT)
Demonstrated ability to work independently in the field, exercising sound judgment and professionalism in challenging situations.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage respectfully with diverse members of the community, including vulnerable individuals.
Experience in issuing infringement notices, preparing incident reports, and attending court proceedings is advantageous.
