The Principal Advisor - Māori, Building & Tenancy, is an exciting new opportunity to lead the development and delivery of a new, strategic programme of work and initiatives that will deliver on our responsibilities under Te Tiriti o Waitangi to realise better outcomes for Māori and all New Zealanders. We care about our customers and stakeholders - this position is an important part of that.

You will support and lead initiatives to enhance Building and Tenancy's capability to deliver on its responsibilities under under Te Tiriti o Waitangi, supporting the Building and Tenancy Leadership Team to lead the development of MBIE's strategic alliances with Māori, and providing specialist advice on how our services, interactions and engagement could be improved to better meet the needs and aspirations of Māori.

This is a highly collaborative position and needs someone to actively build and maintain relationships with the Branch Leadership Team and their teams.

We are looking for someone who can bring their passion and experience of advancing both Crown aspirations and the aspirations of Māori under Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

- Me matatau i te reo Māori me ōna tikanga - take part in general conversation with speakers of te reo Māori, understand most of what is said and contribute relevant comments.
- Expert understanding of Crown responsibilities under Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the aspirations and needs of Māori.
- Proven demonstrated experience of advancing both Crown aspirations and the aspirations of Māori under Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
- A strategic thinker who is politically aware and able to operate as a credible and trusted advisor to the Building and Tenancy Leadership Team
- Proven experience working in a policy and service delivery agency where partnership with Māori communities, iwi, hapū and key Māori organisations are prioritised.
- Must be a skilled writer with the ability to clearly and concisely articulate ideas in a persuasive way.
- An ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing with a wide range of people at all levels, both internal and external to MBIE.
