South Wairarapa District Council (SWDC) is a small council supporting the people of Martinborough, Featherston, Greytown and the surrounding district.

This role aims to deliver our regulatory services in an effective and facilitative way. The role of the Manager Environmental Services plays a key role in this through:

- Acting as the Council’s technical expert
- Providing leadership and mentoring for a small team
- Ensuring that SWDC fulfils its statutory responsibilities
- Investigating complex regulatory technical matters

Reporting to the Group Manager Planning & Environment, the role focuses on food safety, alcohol licensing, animal control, trade waste and by-laws. The Manager will be primarily working with customers and small businesses in the South Wairarapa in the towns of Martinborough, Greytown, Featherston and the surrounding district.

Key attributes for the Manager role include leadership and guidance, excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills, demonstrated understanding of relevant Acts and Council policy, and conflict resolution skills. The ability to provide solutions to regulatory matters/challenges is required and an ability to self-manage workloads is also needed. A high level of integrity is essential for the role, along with the ability to liaise effectively with customers and the public.
- a relevant degree, post graduate qualification, or an EHO qualification
- a minimum of 5 years’ experience, some of which in local government
- sound knowledge of relevant statutes and regulations
- experience in compliance and enforcement procedures
- team leadership abilities
