We have been provided additional staffing resource that we’re excited to use to develop a new designated social work role in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Wellington Regional Hospital to work with patients over the age of 16 years.

Wellington Regional Hospital ICU treats patients who are critically unwell with neurosurgical, trauma, vascular, general medical and surgical patients from the upper South Island and lower North Island. As most of these patients are sedated and incubated the majority of the social work role is working with the patient’s whānau. The Social Worker will complete psycho social assessments utilising trauma informed practice and Te Whare Tapa Whā to support whānau at a very distressing time. There are instances when the patient does not survive and Social Work will support whānau with the sudden loss of their loved one.

The role will work alongside the Neurology Social Worker and provide cover on the Neurological inpatient ward, particularly for patients who transfer from ICU to Neurology. The Neurology and Neurosurgery ward cares for patients who have had a traumatic brain injury, stroke or any other diseases and disorders that affect the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles.

The role covers into other areas of the hospital as needed and will provide social work on Saturday’s across inpatient services on a roster basis about 3 - 4 times per year receiving penal pay rates.

**Mō tō mātou rōpū - About our team**

We are a team of 23 social workers based at Wellington Hospital who provide a service to patients and their whānau across inpatient, outpatient and community settings.
