Mō te tūnga | About the role
The Senior Data Engineer is responsible for providing technical expertise for the improvement of data engineering capability across NZDF to mature how data is managed, transferred, and utilised across NZDF.

**Key responsibilities**:

- Consult, advise, and work closely with stakeholders across NZDF to ensure their data engineering requirements are being met in support of business outcomes.
- Contribute to data engineering standards, frameworks, and processes to support the uplift of data engineering capability.
- Responsible for the design and development of data pipelines and data repositories in support of operational and analytical initiatives.
- Ensure the NZDF is compliant with, and actively contributes to, the development of related Government data standards and frameworks.
- Be an integral member of the DAIM community across the NZDF providing coaching and training to support the maturing of the NZDF's DAIM people capability.
- Keep up to date with the latest technologies, best practices, and trends relevant to data engineering that may be applicable to the NZDF. This includes achieving and maintaining relevant certification for the NZDF.

These skills along with your delivery of fit-for-purpose solutions will be key to your success in the role.

**Technical Skills**:

- Understanding of data management/data engineering methodologies, practices and tools.
- Knowledge of ETL/ELT techniques and development to produce data warehousing solutions.
- Relational and non-relational databases and data warehouse methodology.
- Exposure or working knowledge of management, performance optimisation, and handling quality issues.
- Able to work in a DevOps environment including teams using Agile, Scrum or Kanban project management methodologies.
- Proven experience with designing and developing in cloud environments such as Azure and AWS and using cloud data services such as Databricks and Snowflake.
- Good understanding of strategic and operational data management requirements, standards, processes, and ability to adapt them to meet changing organisational needs.
- Ability in identifying critical success factors to deliver transformational change in how data and information is managed.
- Knowledge of relevant government direction, regulatory and legal requirements relating to data management.

**Additional skills**:

- Proven relationship and stakeholder management experience.
- Ability to cater communication and explain technical information to an audience.
- Ability to positively influence a change in thinking and behaviour.
- Passion for supporting your colleagues to succeed and thrive.
- Exposure working within a complex organisation (advantageous).
