The Opportunity | Te āheinga
This is a unique opportunity to join Puke Ariki as a Museum Registrar, a role vital to safeguarding and providing access to our collections. You’ll play a key role in strengthening registration, loans, audits, and collection care, while embedding bicultural practice into everyday operations. This position ensures compliance with museum standards and Te Tiriti o Waitangi obligations.
Working closely with the Collections, Curatorial and Registration Lead, collection curators, and the Exhibitions team, you’ll coordinate efficient and effective registration services that support documentation, lending, exhibition, display, and safe storage of museum collections. You’ll also assist with research enquiries, support curatorial processes and lead collections and storage-related projects.
This is a collaborative role within a passionate team, contributing to a positive and inclusive culture across Cultural Experiences.
Key Responsibilities | Ngā haepapa matua
Implement and maintain collection management policies to ensure the care, preservation, and security of museum objects in line with national and international standards.
Coordinate object movement, exhibition, and storage in collaboration with curators and staff, ensuring legal and ethical compliance.
Conduct regular inventories and audits to assess object condition and update records.
Manage loans, including transportation, insurance and documentation of objects.
Support research, identification, and authentication of collection items with internal and external experts.
Maintain accurate and accessible digital collection management systems and databases.
Demonstrate expertise in object handling, packing, and transport of delicate and valuable items.
Assist with budget preparation and reporting and ensure regular valuation of collections.
Work with facilities and collections teams to implement effective pest control measures.
Contribute to museum policies and plans related to collections.
Foster a positive team culture and collaborate across Cultural Experiences.
Ensure compliance with relevant legislation and Council policies.
Essential Skills and Experience | Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako\
Relevant tertiary qualification with postgraduate qualification in Museum Studies preferred
Familiarity with Vernon CMS
Demonstrated knowledge of museum standards and best practices for collections care and conservation
Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
Demonstrated ability to problem solve issues with collection management, care and display
Excellent attention to detail, with a meticulous approach to documentation and record-keeping
Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across the museum team
Commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, tikanga and te reo Māori
