**Mō te tūnga | About the role**

New Zealand Police delivers services that ensure communities are safe and feel secure, with less crime, road trauma and fewer victims. Police operates 24 hours a day in a complex environment actively preventing crime and crashes. With around 14,000 staff, we work from community-based police stations and large policing hubs, operate on land, sea and in the air, and respond to over 1.2 million events, 1.3 million emergency calls and over 1 million non-emergency calls every year.

The National Sustainability Manager provides guidance and professional advice; working at strategic, managerial and operational to grow and transform sustainability across the whole of NZ Police (NZP). The Manager - Sustainability is NZP’s thought leader and technical expert on the organisational sustainability ambition, plans and roadmaps, and progress towards climate-related emission reduction targets, and is required to work in a complex operating environment working with diverse stakeholders and participants. The Manager - Sustainability works closely with, and in partnership with functional leaders (internally and externally) with a view to ensure that NZ Police’s purpose, value and ambition for sustainability is well understood, integrated into functional plans, and championed by a wide cross-section of the organisation.

**Key Accountabilities**:

- Lead the organisation’s Sustainability Management capability, including the development of strategy, plans, policies, and processes including working to set ambitious and tangible goals.
- Lead the organisation’s Sustainability Services high performance team.
- Lead the development and vision of NZ Police’s long term, strategic sustainability plan, including working to set ambitious and tangible goals
- Create practices, tools and forums to share sustainability expertise, build knowledge, and generate ideas and commitment to sustainability across NZP and with external partners and stakeholders
- Develop capability to meet (and potentially exceed) mandated requirements
- Review sustainability program objectives, progress, or status to ensure compliance with policies, standards, regulations, or laws
- Develop the highest standards of sustainability reporting and disclosures for NZP and ensure sustainability is front of mind in strategic decision making.
- Provide sustainability expertise to significant acquisition and procurement activities as a standing member of NZP’s Procurement Assurance Board
- Lead Official Responses for all Sustainability related requests for information whether written/oral parliamentary questions, requests under the Official Information Act, or any other required briefs.

**To be successful in this role the Manager Sustainability will**:

- Have credible experience building sustainability related initiatives in large organisations, preferably in the government sector, from strategy to implementation
- Demonstrate the ability to build and lead high performing teams, and develop effective working relationships within teams and across the business to achieve desired outcomes
- Have evidence of successfully supporting organisations to reduce scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions and respond to a changing climate
- Be competent in developing and delivering multimode, evidence-based communications that convey a clear understanding of the unique needs of different audiences
- Be a responsive and agile business partner to ensure organisational requirements and outcomes are met
- Be proactive, self-directed, and motivated to get the job done amongst tight and competing deadlines
- Foster a culture of innovation and perseverance which will encourage the organisation to move forward
