**Mō **te **tūranga **| About the role**
- Fixed-term position (3 years).
- B ased in Kirikir ir oa/ Hamilton, but our sites cover the Waikato region.
- Th is new position is in the Ecology Team at WRC.
- There are two main facets to this role - sediment and flow monitoring ; and growing our relationship on monitoring ma t ters with our Māori J oint Management Agreement ( JMA) partners and other iwi Māori groups.
- You will be part of a team who measure, analyse, and report on the ecological health of natural resources across the Waikato region.
- The information collected is used by WRC scientists, and the government for managing peoples’ and the environments’ wellbeing.
- Although there is a lot of physically demanding fieldwork, all our data needs to be processed, and quality checked in the office. Proficiency in using computers and technology is a must, alongside a strong aptitude for the environmental science and related fields.
- Of particular focus, y ou will champion the s haring of monitoring knowledge with our JMA partners, u ndertaking actions under our JMAs, a ttending w ā nanga to demonstrate monitoring techniques, and u p-skill ing staff on undertaking monitoring in a culturally appropriate manner. Working alongside our Science Section to explore m ā tauranga Māori based monitoring methods.
- Health and safety are at the forefront of everything we do at WRC, whether working on your own, or as part of a team.
- You will utilise your field knowledge to collect data safely and offer suggestions to improve the safety and efficiency of our sites.
- Our health and safety training also covers survival and rescue in swift water; therefore, you will need to be a capable swimmer ( competency testing will be undertaken).
**The role **involves**:
- Collecting, processing, and quality checking hydrology data at our sediment monitoring sites, including data input into databases.
- Working with iwi Māori to build trusted relationships and the sharing of environmental monitoring approaches. This may include undertaking marae visits and supporting monitoring wānanga.
- Working with WRC Science Team to explore mātauranga Māori monitoring techniques and how tikanga can be incorporated.
- Provide monitoring support in the Ecology Team including for geothermal features.
- Driving to remote parts of the region and occasional nights away.
- A strong focus on working safely, looking after yourself and those around you, and adhering to council h ealth and s afety policies.
**Mō **te **tangata **| About you**
- Ability to learn. Hydrology training can be provided on the job.
- Understanding of t e ao Māori, tikanga Māori and the role of Māori in being kaitiaki for our taiao.
- IT competent and able to process and analyse data.
- Confident in the outdoors including working in and around water.
- Ability to undertake physically demanding work including moving and carrying heavy equipment.
**Mō **ngā **pūkenga **| Qualifications and experience**
- At least 2 years’ e xperience in environmental monitoring.
- Previous experience working with iwi Māori on environmental initiatives.
- A tertiary qualification or degree in natural, physical, or environmental sciences or related discipline.
- Previous experience undertaking environmental monitoring.
- Hydrology experience is desired, though not essential.
- Full d rivers licence - comfortable driving Utes.
- Capable swimmer (competency testing will be undertaken).
- Excellent communication skills - written and verbal.
