Assistant Economist
We are looking for an Assistant Economist to join our highly regarded Economics team. This is a permanent role based in either our Tamaki Makaurau (Auckland) office or Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington) office.
**Ko matou tenei | Who we are**
As the economic regulator, we work to deliver long-term benefits for consumers. We do so by promoting competition and, where competition is not possible, by promoting outcomes consistent with those produced in competitive markets.
We have a Commission-wide Economics team which covers the breadth of the Commission's work. Our economists tackle a diverse range of questions with rigour, accuracy, and insight. They are involved in solving challenging and varied questions such as:
- How can we incentivise innovation?
- What are the competitive effects of algorithms and artificial intelligence, and how should competition policy adopt to these new and emerging technologies?
- How can we promote competition in markets that are not as competitive as they may be?
**Mo te turanga | About the role**
As an Assistant Economist, you'll be part of a dynamic and collaborative economics team that provides expert economic analysis and advice across a range of regulatory and strategic areas. While your primary focus will be within the Competition Economics sub-team, you'll also have opportunities to contribute to work in infrastructure regulation, market regulation, and broader economic projects.
You'll collaborate with economists, lawyers, and investigators in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment. Your work will involve supporting economic analysis, contributing to research, and helping deliver high-quality advice that informs decision-making across a range of regulatory and policy areas. You'll be encouraged to grow your skills in microeconomics, data analysis, and competition economics, while working on issues that have real impact for consumers and businesses in Aotearoa New Zealand.
**He korero mou | About you**
Our people come from a variety of backgrounds and life experiences which together support the fabric of our mahi and contributes to our vision to make New Zealanders better off.
We are keen to hear from you if any of the following sounds like you:
- Enthusiasm and a willingness to learn
- Strong teamwork skills in a multi-disciplinary environment
- The ability to work across multiple matters within tight timeframes
- Strong communication and influencing skills
To be successful in this role you will have qualifications in economics or a related discipline, preferably at honours level or above.
As our organisation flexes and adapts to meet changing priorities and commitments, we are looking for people who are also comfortable with change, able to adapt, and can contribute positively to a one Commission view. Your ability to show your learning agility, open mindedness and curiosity will set you apart from the rest.
**Te wahi mahi | Working here**
We're friendly and collaborative and enjoy contributing to our shared vision of making New Zealanders better off and are committed to our people's wellbeing. Our flexible working options are key to supporting that goal and our people have the technology they need to make it happen. Our environment is inclusive, and our people know they are free to be their authentic selves at work and structure the way they work to suit their lifestyle.
