Job Summary: Performs complex mechanical engineering duties following designated standards and procedures. Works closely with other engineering disciplines. Focusing on continuous improvement, designs produced should exceed the customer’s value, schedule and feature expectations. Works closely with other engineering disciplines. This position typically works under general supervision and direction. Incumbents of this position will regularly exercise discretionary and substantial decision-making authority.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develops equipment interfaces and procurement specifications.
- Designs mechanical structures, components, and subsystems.
- Prepares design specifications, analyses and recommendations.
- Performs modelling or subsystem prototype assembly.
- Prepares design and operation objectives, specifications and resource needs.
- Recommends test control, strategies, apparatus and equipment.
- Supports the interfaces with customers, contractors and marketing vendors.
- Evaluates vendor capabilities to provide required products or services.
- Conducts in-house design reviews and technical meetings.
- Prepares design proposals to reflect cost, schedule and technical approaches.
- Monitors project status and progress.
- Manages schedule for mechanical engineering tasks.
- Keeps abreast of improvements in mechanical engineering techniques.
- Assist in product definition which includes but is not limited to: defining important product requirements, both technical and commercial; proposing product solution alternatives; contributing to product briefs; deriving mechanical requirements from customer requirements; and writing the product specification
- Review specifications, surveys and research of customer equipment, concept designs, developing a detailed schedule, preliminary and detailed design, building prototypes, reviews and keeping minutes, production handover and support, root cause analysis.
- Assist the program and staff managers in planning the design requirements and managing future work. This includes preparing and maintaining development and implementation plans, contributing to the preparation of capital acquisition plans
- Generate designs and provide documentation such that designed components can be easily maintained and re-used by others
- Contribute to mechanical product design peer reviews
- Develop test plans and test procedures, analyse test results and writing test reports with conclusions and recommendations, adhering to and developing company standards for Mechanical development.
- Evaluate and support investigations into field failures

Minimum Job Requirements:
**Qualifications**:
Essential:
- Tertiary qualification in the field of mechanical engineering, computer science, information systems, or other relevant technical; discipline
Skills/Experience/Knowledge:
Essential:
- 5 years’ experience in a similar role in similar industry
- Advanced knowledge of mechanical design principles and techniques including design for manufacture and assembly
- Good knowledge of plastic injection molded part design
- Good knowledge of machined metal and sheet metal part design
- Knowledge of finite element structural analysis, including calculations of stresses
- Design, development and analysis of hardware components.
- Effective written and oral communication skills to include the use of typical office automation products such as word processors and spreadsheets.
- Experience with 3D CAD systems (E.g., SolidWorks)
Desirable
- Experience with lifecycle management systems (e.g. PLM)
- Knowledge of Model Based Engineering
- Workshop experience
