This is your opportunity as a senior leader to be Head of the Labour Inspectorate, part of MBIE’s Employment Services. You will be responsible for upholding minimum employment rights, preventing exploitation and ensuring fair workplaces, making a difference to the lives of everyone who works in Aotearoa New Zealand.
As head of our compliance and enforcement activities, you will be responsible for the strategic direction for the Labour Inspectorate, accountable for delivering our statutory obligations and wider responsibilities including the joint Immigration New Zealand-Labour Inspectorate prevention of migrant exploitation programme. You will lead over 100 people working in Inspectorate teams located across New Zealand.
The successful applicant will bring your extensive and successful experience in compliance and enforcement of regulation and navigating the justice system, deep knowledge of employment law and wider workplace regulation, and proven skills in senior organisational leadership and service delivery.
You’ll get the chance to work collaboratively across MBIE and with our people delivering services to the public. This is a public-facing role, also requiring regular engagement at a senior level with the public and private sector, business and worker groups, and the media.
As a member of the wider Employment Services leadership team, you’ll also get the opportunity to contribute to overall governance of the employment regulator.

- Extensive and proven strategic management and senior leadership experience, including engaging, motivating and supporting their people leaders, teams and individuals to deliver effectively and thrive at work
- Proven experience as a regulator, setting strategic direction and achieving successful regulatory outcomes, in a compliance and enforcement environment
- Wide ranging knowledge of regulatory systems, practice, and demonstrable experience in transformational and innovative service delivery to achieve regulatory outcomes
- Able to quickly establish and build trust and credibility and strong working relationships with senior managers and people in MBIE, the public sector, Ministers, unions, business groups, stakeholders and international counterparts
- Experience working with and through Māori partners/agencies to meet the needs and aspirations of Māori.
- Strong communication skills, able to communicate effectively in a range of settings with credibility, in the media, public speaking, and more informal settings with industry and unions
- Strategic thinking capability, including a deep understanding of wider social, economic, and political environment, authorising environment, and strong judgment in managing risk and seizing opportunity
- Strong orientation towards working as a team player and collaborating with others, in and outside of the employment system, and to negotiate with peers to align disparate perspectives and deliver collective outcomes
- Must have the legal right to live and work in New Zealand.
- Regular travel is required within New Zealand as part of the role.
- Need to satisfactorily complete credit checks, police vetting and obtain security clearances
