Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a Pūkenga - Lecturer (Teaching) in Education to join Te Whānau o Ako Pai - School of Education on a permanent, full-time contract. This position will commence as soon as possible. 

This position is intended to support our international students, particularly those entering our initial teacher education programmes. The successful applicant will work closely with Pouakorangi - Programme Directors across the School, including the Pouakorangi - Programme Director for the Master of Teaching and Learning (Primary) cohort of international students, and will contribute to the development and teaching of ongoing support programmes for international students. 

Key responsibilities:

  • Teaching graduate and postgraduate courses within the Initial Teacher Education and Master of Education programmes and visiting student teachers on Professional Practice Placements in schools. 
  • Undertake research into their teaching, and to supervise Masters and PhD students in research topics related to international education. 
  • Effectively engage and mentor students from different backgrounds.
  • Use initiative in order to build and maintain strong relationships with international students and with wider units within the University that support international students.
  • Contribute effectively to the administration of programmes within Te Whānau o Ako Pai -School of Education.
  • Contribution to Hautūtanga/leadership to the profession, University, Faculty and School and engagement in scholarly and administrative services is also expected.

Ō pūmanawa - About you

The successful candidate will have an understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the bicultural nature of New Zealand education, hold relevant academic qualifications, a New Zealand recognised teaching qualification and have successful experience in teaching and/or teacher education. 

Key requirements: 

  • A completed (or be close to completed) PhD in Education or a related area.
  • Experience and specialisation in applied research related to primary/secondary education and/or teacher education. 
  • Registration and full certification (or eligibility for registration and certification) with the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand is essential. 
  • Experience in and knowledge of culturally sustaining and enhancing practices is essential.
  • Specific expertise in international education or one or more of the primary or secondary learning/subject areas is required. 
  • Experience in ESOL teaching is desirable.
