As part of the Ngā Pou o te Taumaru the Legal, Ethics and Privacy Branch is responsible for providing a centre of legal advice leadership and expertise for MBIE and is an exemplar of best practice for both the public service and the wider New Zealand labour and business markets.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for two Litigators to join our Auckland based Litigation team on either a 12 month fixed-term or permanent basis. In this role you will advise on and appear in proceedings before a variety of licensing Boards, Tribunals and Courts on civil and criminal matters arising in relation to the broad range of enforcement activities across MBIE. These include prosecutions and appeals in the District Court, enforcement of minimum employment standards in the Employment Relations Authority and Employment Court, refugee and deportation appeals in the Immigration and Protection Tribunal, disciplinary complaints before occupational licensing boards, and appearances before the Tenancy Tribunal.
You will work with autonomy in a collaborative and supportive environment. You will learn from the experts to build your knowledge as well as sharing your knowledge with others to conduct litigation, provide advice and support on some of MBIE’s most complex legal matters.

Applications will be considered from lawyers with up to 3 years’ experience, including Graduates. Further to this you will need to have the following:
- A tertiary qualification in law and ability to obtain a current practising certificate
- A strong desire to work in litigation
- Well-developed written and verbal communication skills and ability to draft legal documentation
- Strong relationship management skills and an ability to work well with others
- Enthusiasm, drive and a proactive nature
- Full, clean NZ Driver’s licence
- Must be eligible to live and work in NZ
