Research Database Manager, Northern
**Permanent, full-time position based in our Northern Region**
Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is the country's largest employer, delivering universal public healthcare to 5 million New Zealanders.
We provide essential hospital, specialist, and community health services across 80+ locations — from large urban centres to rural towns and remote communities.
Our goal is to improve health outcomes for all New Zealanders by delivering equitable, accessible and innovative care.
**About the Role**
As Research Database Manager, you will play a vital role in enabling high-quality, ethical, and efficient health research across the Northern region. You'll work collaboratively with researchers, biostatisticians, and national research teams to design, implement, and manage research data management platforms — including tools such as REDCap, SQL, and other electronic data capture systems. Your work will ensure data is collected, stored, and analysed effectively, supporting the integrity and success of research projects that contribute to better health outcomes and greater equity. You will also provide research advice on study design, protocols, and analysis plans, facilitate research data governance, and promote best practice in data management across all research activities. This role offers the opportunity to lead improvements in research systems and support the delivery of the organisation's Research Strategy while upholding Māori data sovereignty principles.
**About you**
You are a technically skilled and detail-oriented data professional who is passionate about improving research quality and supporting innovation through strong data systems. You combine expertise in data management with a sound understanding of research processes and governance, and you thrive in collaborative, cross-disciplinary environments.
You will bring:
- A relevant graduate or post-graduate qualification.
- At least five years' experience in research, data analysis, or evaluation.
- Proven experience managing databases and electronic data capture systems such as REDCap and SQL.
- Proficiency with statistical software such as SAS, R, or SPSS.
- Knowledge of clinical trial design and research data management methods.
- Understanding of Te Ara Tika Māori Research Guidelines and Māori Data Sovereignty principles.
- Strong relationship management skills, with the ability to engage effectively with researchers, funders, and Māori stakeholders.
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.
Desirable experience includes project management training, experience in health or clinical research, and familiarity with the Statistics NZ Integrated Data Infrastructure (IDI).
