He angitūtanga | About the role
This role is focused on statutory and compliance tasks with components of advocacy and community engagement work, it is anticipated to be an 80:20 split across the two workstreams. The role will work across the Hokitika District as part of a team of 3 responsible for the delivery of local statutory, engagement and education work. You may be required to act as a warranted officer under the Conservation Act. A large amount of your work will involve working alongside permissions holders on public conservation land to find a balance that enables activities whilst protecting conservation values.
The activities most commonly dealt with in the Hokitika District are Access Arrangements for small scale alluvial gold mining and Concessions for grazing, gravel take and to a lesser degree easements, hydro generation, beehives and recreation events. Your work will include engaging with iwi/hapu/whānau, and maintaining effective stakeholder relationships with businesses, trusts, councils, and community groups.
The position is varied, challenging, and rewarding. It will be focussed on:

- Monitoring of permissions granted for authorized activities on Public Conservation Land
- Monitoring for and responding to unauthorised activities on Public Conservation Land
- Under the RMA, assessment of effects and reporting to contribute where the Department is deemed an affected party
- Statutory land administration (boundary issues, land disposals and land exchanges)
- Delivery of the District's Engagement Plan including education initiatives and initiating and maintaining partnership opportunities with local iwi, businesses and the community that deliver value to conservation
- Support of other District priorities and team members from time to time.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated team member with excellent people skills to effectively work with a variety of stakeholders. If you have the following attributes, we are keen to hear from you:

- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to foster effective relationships
- Previous experience working in a compliance and regulatory environment
- Ability to write clearly and concisely using plain English, you will be able to provide context, critical analysis, and logical recommendations for decision makers
- Ability to effectively and positively engage with people involved with land use that often does / or is perceived to conflict with conservation values
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including a proven ability to write accurate, clear and concise reports.
- A ‘can do' attitude and proven excellent organisational skills, including the ability to balance competing demands, meet deadlines and have a problem-solving approach.
- Full New Zealand Driver's Licence

Desirable
- Experience in working with and partnering with statutory authorities, community groups, iwi or business groups.
- A good knowledge and or strong interest in the NZ environment
- Experience in primary industries, particularly farming and mining
- Knowledge of the Western South Island

This Ranger Community position is part of a small energetic and hardworking community team of three. This team is part of a larger District team of 16 permanent roles. And the Hokitika District team is itself part of a much larger regional team of over 100 roles based at the Hokitika Office site.
The Hokitika District extends from the Waitaha River in the south to Taramakau River in the north and inland to the main divide, taking in parts of Arthurs Pass National Park and the extensive wildernesses of several large river valleys.
