**Āu Mahi | What You Will Do**
Kaitoko provide academic advising and holistic support for all first-year students. They proactively work to close the equity gap, smooth transitions into UC, enhance engagement, and help students progress through their first year with confidence.

The role of Kaitoko Matua is to lead advisory support for first-year students and to develop, implement, and continuously improve proactive, data informed advising practices. The Kaitoko Matua will also support the development of an advising community of practice in collaboration with other university advising units. The role will provide guidance on systems and processes that contribute to improving retention, achievement, and completion rates especially for priority learners (including ākonga Māori and Pasifika, first-in-whānau, students with disabilities, and students facing barriers to success).

The Kaitoko Matua will have a strong passion for supporting the goals of Kia Angitu, the University of Canterbury's student success programme. In addition to upholding UC's values, they will also have the following skills and experiences:

- knowledge of the tertiary education environment, academic regulations, structures, policies and procedures, is essential
- student engagement and service experience with the ability to deal with complex and critical student matters
- extensive relationship management experience, developing and building effective professional connections
- excellent communication skills with awareness of and sensitivity towards intercultural and intersectional diversity
- change management skills with the ability to effectively resolve conflict
- active commitment to UC values, tikanga (protocols and processes), kawa, of cultural practice and traditions as guided by mana whenua and valuing te reo Māori.
- experience in developing policy and procedures in a medium to large organisation
- experience using Dynamics 365 or similar customer relationship management platform
- a comprehensive understanding of the academic, social and cultural journey and needs of ākonga.

**Mahi Ngātahi | Who You Will Work With**
The Kaitoko Matua will be located in Te Pātaka, UC's student hub. They will work with a team of Kaitoko | Student Advisors, leadership from Kia Angitu | Student Success, colleagues from Kaitokhutohu Ākonga | Future Student Advisors, Kaiurngi | Māori Student Advisors, the Pacific Development Team and a wide range of faculty and service unit staff across the university.
