At the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC), we invest over $3 billion annually to support lifelong learning and vocational success across the country. As part of this transformation, we are building a smarter, more connected data ecosystem and we need a dynamic Business Intelligence leader to help us get there.
As Team Leader Business Intelligence, you will lead a talented team of BI developers to deliver trusted, timely, and actionable insights. You will champion the use of Power BI and modern data platforms to support evidence-based decision-making across TEC and the wider tertiary education sector. This is your opportunity to shape how data drives performance, accountability, and innovation.
This is a newly established permanent position which is strictly based in Wellington.

Reporting to the Manager Data & Digital Development, this role leads a team of BI professionals. You will provide strategic and technical leadership, ensuring TEC's BI products are scalable, modern, and impactful. You will also drive the adoption of data literacy and champion the use of Power BI, Databricks, and other tools to deliver insights that support TEC's goals.
Key responsibilities include:
- Lead the creation of advanced PowerBI dashboards and data models that turn complex data into clear information & insights. Champion automation and modern development practices to ensure our BI solutions are scalable, efficient, and reliable.
- Coaching and mentoring team members, supporting career development
- Partnering with stakeholders to deliver data products that meet business needs
- Promoting TEC's data-savviness and data storytelling culture
**He korero mou**:_What we are looking for_
We are looking for a collaborative and technically skilled leader who thrives on innovation and continuous improvement. You will be passionate about data, experienced in BI development, and committed to growing a high-performing team. You will bring the following:
- Strong technical experience (5+ years') hands-on experience with Power BI, data modelling, and dashboard development
- Experience (ideally 2+ years) in a leadership role or managing high performing technical teams
- Proficiency in SQL and DAX for data transformation and PowerBI development.
- Ability to align BI initiatives with organisational goals and drive sector-wide performance improvement
- Experience in rolling out data literacy programmes with strong service orientation and commitment to delivering value through data

The salary range for this position starts from $125,813 up to $148,015 + 3% KiwiSaver, depending on demonstrable skills and experience.
